Peptide nucleic acid (PNA)

Peptide nucleic acid (PNA) is an artificially synthesized polymer similar to DNA or RNA and is used in biological research and medical treatments. PNA is not known to occur naturally.

PNA Synthesis

All PNA oligomers were synthesized on an ABI 433A using Bio chemistry. The fluorescein was attached to the PNA by activating a 0.1 mol/l 5, (6)-carboxyl fluorescein solution with 0.095 mol/l HATU and 0.1 mol/l diisopropyl-ethylamine.

Peptide nucleic acids (PNA) are DNA mimics with a pseudopeptide backbone. PNA is an extremely good structural mimic of DNA (or RNA), and PNA oligomers are able to form very stable duplex structures with Watson-Crick complementary DNA, RNA (or PNA) oligomers, and they can also bind to targets in duplex DNA by helix invasion.
